My interest in Kirishitan editions began during an artist residency at Art Village Shirakino in Minamishimabara in the summer of 2022. These publications were produced using a printing press with metal movable type brought from Europe to Japan by the Jesuits in the late sixteenth century. Most were subsequently lost under the policies prohibiting Christianity.
This work takes as its motif Santos no Gosagyō no Uchi Nukigaki (Selections from the Lives of the Saints), a Kirishitan edition published in Kazusa, now part of Minamishimabara, in 1591. It is considered the earliest surviving Japanese publication printed with metal movable type to bear a publication date. I selected eight pages in total, comprising the cover and passages concerning Santo Estevão (Saint Stephen), Christianity’s first martyr.
2022年夏に南島原市アートビレッジ・シラキノで滞在制作をしたことをきっかけにキリシタン版に興味を持つようになった。キリシタン版とは、16世紀末、日本イエズス会によってヨーロッパから日本に持ち込まれた金属活字印刷機を用いて出版された印刷・出版物であるが、その後の禁教政策によりほとんどが消失した。
本作品は、キリシタン版『サントスの御作業の内抜書』をモチーフにしている。原本は1591年に加津佐（現在の南島原市）で刊行された。刊行年が記された日本の金属活字印刷物の中で最も古いものとされる。表紙およびキリスト教最初の殉教者サント・エステワン（聖ステファヌス）の箇所を計8ページを抜粋した。
