A hanging scroll I found in an antique shop was mounted with old devotional prints distributed along the Saigoku pilgrimage to thirty-three temples dedicated to Kannon. Blurred impressions, patches of faint ink, and ink bleeding reveal that each print was made by hand. Perhaps the scroll had hung for many years: some images had become unrecognizable, darkened and stained by smoke. Through these traces, I could sense the presence of the people who had once been there. Through countless layers of ink and gradually disintegrating forms, I sought to express the number of devotional prints distributed, the long hours of prayer offered before this scroll, and faith fading with time.

I began by reconstructing the images that had become indistinguishable through age, referring to historical sources and devotional prints still distributed today. Where details remained unclear, I filled them in with my imagination. As I printed hundreds of times, I began to feel that the act of printing itself might resemble prayer.
